Getting ready! – choosing the right hero

Before we start in to a fresh round of CHIMPS on the monkey meadow you need to select the right hero monkey for the job. In the following tutorial I will use Obyn, the druid hero. Thankfully its free and you can use it without needing to spend your precious monkey money. The tutorial from now on will be separated into the different rounds where you will need to act, upgrade or place in some kind of form, so read the upcoming step ahead of reaching it and slow down your game. Have fun!

Round 6 – First steps are important

As CHIMPS already starts in round 6 you will need to start really good and prepared into the game. The best tower to do so relaxed is the druid. Place it in the lower left corner of the first “intersection”. This will give it good enough coverage to be the sole defense until round 9.

Round 9 – the hero comes to the rescue

To proceed further place the hero which you should have set to Obyn in the lower right corner of the first intersection right next to the druid. It will now help the druid with bloon popping and will give it some other nice boosts on higher levels.

Round 14 – upgrades on the druid

To proceed onto higher rounds without any major worries, upgrade your druid on the middle path to (0-2-0).

Round 21 – even more upgrades to the druid

Once you reached round 21 you should have enough money to buy your druid another upgrade on the middle path. It should now be upgraded to (0-3-0).

Beware of the tarn bloon on round 24 and read the next step now before reaching round 23!

Round 24 – be careful and take it slow

Even though your line of defense to the bloons might be working quite good, round 24 is where this comes to an end. To fight the single camo ballon in this round you need to activate the power of the hero Obyn right when the bloon enters to place a thornbush in its way. You may want to slow down the game in round 23 already as it can otherwise get quite difficult to time it right.

Round 29 – reinforcing the camo defense

You already defeated a camo bloon in round 24 but the method used there wont last you long. To help with that place a monkey village in the upper left corner of the intersection and upgrade it to (0-2-0) so that all the monkeys in its range are able to defeat camo bloons.

Round 33 -upgrading the druid

To prepare for the larger and larger masses of bloons coming towards you, upgrade the original druid on the upper path to (2-3-0) which gives it the ability to send out strikes of lightning.

Round 39 – preparing for the MOAB

To slowly prepare for the upcoming MOAB place a bomb shooter in the upper right corner of the first intersection and upgrade it on the middle path to (2-3-0). Also make sure that it is within the range of the monkey village.

Round 41 – seemingly worthless upgrade

Once you got the money, upgrade your druid to (2-4-0) on the middle path. Although this upgrade would give the druid the ability to generate money with an ability, this is not possible inside of CHIMPS mode but we still need to buy this upgrade to get to the much more powerful fifth tier upgrade. While you are at it also toggle the druids priority from strong to first.

At the end of round 41 or at the start of round 41 you should also have enough money to buy the bigger radius upgrade on the upper path for the monkey village and shortly after also the jungle drums upgrade to have it on (2-2-0).

With these upgrades in place you should now be good until round 46.

Round 46 – stepping up the MOAB defense

To fight the upcoming BFB (red MOAB class bloon) it is needed to upgrade the bomb shooter to MOAB assassin on the middle path. It should then be on the (2-4-0) upgrade path.

Round 50 – finishing up the bloon masses

To deal with the large amounts of bloons it is advised to place another bomb shooter right next to the already existing one so it is within the range of the monkey village. You should also have enough money to upgrade this one to (0-2-4) so that it has the recursive cluster.

Round 53 – slowing your enemies down

The bloons can come in quite fast at these rounds. To slow them down place a glue gunner monkey right next to the monkey village and upgrade it to (0-2-4) so that it affects the MOABs heavily.

With this setup you are now good to go until round 74.

Round 74 – unleash the tier 5

After saving up all you money over the rounds you should now be able to afford the final fifth tier upgrade for the druid, the spirit of the forest (2-5-0). This gives it the ability to grow dangerous spikes all across the path.

Round 79 – boosting the towers

To boost the popping power of your towers place an alchemist to the left of the druid and proceed by upgrading it to (4-0-2).

Round 84 – making it difficult for the MOABs

To make it harder for the MOABs in the upcoming last rounds of the game, place a ninja monkey above the first bomb shooter so that it is still covered by the monkey village and upgrade it to the sticky bomb path (0-2-4).

Round 92 – second tier 5 monkey

After saving a bit more money you should have enough to afford your second tier 5 monkey. Select the ninja monkey you placed a step earlier and upgrade it to master bomber (0-2-5).

Round 97 – last steps

Now you nearly made it. To finish it up you can place an ice monkey next to the ninja and upgrade it to (2-0-4). You should now be good to go to finish the game successfully. To be save though you can lastly buy the (2-0-5) upgrade for the ice monkey at the very beginning of round 100.

Victory!

Congratulations, you made it! You popped the evil BAD on Round 100 in CHIMPS mode! You can now decide between ending the game or going into free play. By simply upgrading the existing towers you are then able to reach a few rounds higher which you can then let anyone know in your account dashboard.

How to get to the Challenge editor

1. Click on “Play Social”
2. Choose the “Edit Challenge” option
3. Use the “Edit Challenge” Button.
4. In the Challenge Editor you can now configure a BTD6 level to your liking.

Configuring your challenge

Lets take a look at all the options you have. All the options can either be selected with a simple dropdown-menu or by clicking into the input panel you want to edit.

The basics

• Choose your map on the left
• Select a difficulty
• Starting cash, starter lives, max lives, start and end round are normally set to default values matching your selected difficulty but you can choose them to your liking. Keep in mind that the End round can only be set as high as you got in one of your own runs.
• Least cash can be set to limit the maximum amount of money the player will be able to spend, least tiers limits the amount of times the player can upgrade or buy a tower

Select your monkeys

• Add monkey you want to allow using with the “Add” button and configure the amount or leave it at unlimited
• Click on “Restrict” to limit the upgrade paths of certain towers. If you want to apply a limitation to all towers you got click on “Apply all”. “Reset all” set the restrictions back to normal.

The checkboxes can be used to (top to down, left to right):

• enable powers
• enable selling
• making camo bloons appear
• disable doubling the income per round
• enable monkey knowledge advantages
• enable the player to pay to skip a gameover situation
• making regrow bloons appear

Why am I even doing this? – Story

As many other Tower Defense Games the story is not very important in BTD6. The key aspect is that you are in charge of a monkey city which needs to be defended against an attack of balloons. Why? Well we don’t know but when playing a tower defense game what you are fighting doesn’t matter too much anyway.

“Where is my cursor” – Game appearance

The characters are designed in a cartoonist style and look like they were made for a children’s game. Don’t get me wrong though: I thing they look really cool and the skins that Ninja Kiwi releases are also really nice.

Sound-wise there is an amazing sound track that everyone who has played BTD recognizes instantly and there’s a variety of sound effects for all the different heroes and monkeys. Furthermore all balloons make a different noise when popping which can be quite annoying on the higher rounds when many of them are destroy in a matter of seconds.

Balloon destroyers – Gameplay

Regarding the gameplay, BTD6 offers a classical challenging tower defense experience. Players have to strategically place towers along a predetermined path to pop balloons before they reach the end of the path. Over time more balloons appear and they get new abilities, more health points or more protection. The path itself is different depending on the map you choose beforehand. Every map also has their own theme which adds great variety to the gameplay.

If you can’t prevent the balloons from reaching the end you’ll loose life points. On the other hand destroying the balloons or completing rounds rewards you money that can be used to purchase new monkey “towers” or to upgrade them. If a tower destroys balloons it earns experience points which are used to unlock the upgrades for the monkey that can then be bought later in the game.

Each tower or monkey has its unique abilities and strengths, and players must carefully choose which towers to place and where to place them to maximize their effectiveness. There a 3 paths with 5 upgrades for each tower and some of them even have a sixth final upgrade: the paragon. These are really powerful upgrades that require lots of Xp to unlock and are used in the endgame. If you purchased a tier 5 upgrade for one tower you can place another tower of the same kind with the same tier 5 upgrade.

Especially on higher game rounds you will need to organize the tower placement a bit as it gets increasingly important to develop some kind of strategy against different kind of balloons.

BTD6 also added a hero system (which wasn’t available in BTD5). Heroes are basically a type of tower that can only be placed once and levels up over time which unlocks special abilities. You can also purchase skins for the hero of your choice with monkey money. This currency can be bought with real money.

There are multiple gamemodes and difficulty settings to offer many different experiences. With different difficulties you need to complete a different amount of rounds. After having successfully done that you can enter the free play where you earn less experience points but can go open end.

You can also complete daily challenges made by other players or create your own. There are race-events where you can earn rewards based on how fast you complete. Ninja Kiwi also occasionally adds a boss-event in the game.

My second favorite gamemode after the classic coop matches is the Odyssey where to need to complete 3 levels on a chosen difficulty with a certain amount of monkeys you can select. This was quite challenging but also lots of fun as you learn to use tower effectively.

Slowmotion action – Hardware requirements

The hardware requirements are quite low making it possible to even play the game on tablets and smartphones (see below). Sadly when playing the game to higher rounds it is completely irrelevant which hardware you have as the game engine itself is completely overwhelmed with the amount of balloons and effects from you monkey army. Even with relatively high-end hardware we found the game not using all of the available RAM space or processing power of the GPU.

We do a little grinding – Achievements and experience curve

The game in itself is running hard in the endgame but in itself it’s difficult for the placer when just starting out.

You learn quickly just by completing different levels. Using different towers helps a lot to get some basic understanding of tactics. If you want to learn fast either read some of the strategy guide on the Bloons Fandom or just play the daily challenges which only give you certain monkeys to complete a map.

There are 146 steam achievements to complete if you want to 100% the game and at the moment 23 towers that can be leveled up to unlock all upgrades. By completing certain event you also earn trophies that can be used to purchase items in a trophy shop. These include skins for bloons, user avatars or new emotes.

As you play you’ll earn experience points and level up. This rewards you with monkey knowledge that can be used in a skill tree for tower improvements. There are 4 skill trees for each monkey category.

“Can you give me X amount of money?” – Crossplay

Earning Experience points gets boring after some time so why not do it together:

Because the game is running on PC (Steam) as well as on mobile it offers a really great crossplay experience. This especially comes in handy when you want to play a short and spontaneous round with friends where not everyone has the a laptop with them. So far we only experienced one disconnect in a coop match, playing the low rounds works really well.

Another cool feature is the cloud save that makes switching from one device to another really easy. This also keeps your data safe if you loose your mobile phone with the game on it. Conclusion
