Shapez is a factory building game with a really simple to understand game mechanic. Create shapes of all colors and forms and thats it. Sounds boring? You would be absolutely wrong. Never underestimate the addiction potential of this endless world with limitless possibilities for automation structures. Lets have a closer look!

General Information – small dev studios for the win

Shapez has been released in June 2020 by the single developer Tobias Springer. Its steam page boasts overwhelmingly positive reviews and with its current price tag of 10 € (half that in a good sale) the first impressions are already good. Note also that the game has just gotten a successor whose graphics have been massively updated and have been transformed in to 3D.

Gameplay – Factory here, Automation there

The gameplay of shapez is quite simple and self explanatory also eliminating the need for overly long introductions at the beginning. You simply rotate, color, stack and cut shapes that exist in random spots on the map to feed a central hub in the middle of the map via conveyor belts. The hub changes the shapes it requires from you to get to the next level each time. For example to get from level 1 to 2 you need to feed it 30 gray circles. With increasing levels the shapes get increasingly complex and in turn require increasingly complex and large production factories. With each level you unlock a new possibility to edit the shapes color, orientation, place and so on. Going to the extremes you can even go completely crazy and build whole computers in this cute looking game.

The main factory blocks are the extractor (1) which harvests the random on the map occurring spots of shapes and colors, the conveyor belt (2) which moves harvested items/shapes from one spot to another, the coloring module (3) which inputs a shape and a color and colors the shape in this color, the cut module (4) which halves the input shape into two pieces and the turn module (5) which rotates a shape 90°. As you can see there aren’t that many and they are not very difficult to understand. This original simplicity that quickly evolves into complex and tightly build automation machines is exactly the factor which makes this game so appealing and addictive. Try it out yourself and you will soon want to build more and more complex factories as if it lies in the human nature to automate everything we see.

Graphics – Simple 2D top down style

Shapez works with a simple top down style 2D graphics style and focuses more on the gameplay mechanics than the textures. I personally like the minimalistic design not just for its clean look but also for its performance. Even with quite a few buildings and automations set up the game runs well and smooth even on older hardware. That said the game can absolutely run on work laptops such as the Thinkpad x270 but if you actually want to achieve any work i would rather recommend you not to install it :).

For performance reasons the game switches between two modes depending you zoom in on the map. If you zoom out it switches to a map mode in which you can not build and buildings and any items on conveyor belts are not rendered. For me personally this was a bit annoying as i wanted to have a better view of the surrounding factories while building the current one. But don’t worry the dev though of that:

Modding capability – Mods keep game alive

We talk quite a bit about mods on here and that for a reason: Mods keep games alive. The most popular example is the all known king of computer games Minecraft. For our detailed explanation look here. But also Kerbal Space Program 1 is a perfect example for a game that even lives on after its successor has been released thanks to an incredible modding community that has extended the possibilities in graphics and gameplay mechanics again and again over the years.

Luckily the dev of Shapez also included modding capability into the game which allows you to browse through a large assortment of different mods including one that changes the zoom point in which the map view kicks in. Its simply brilliant when game developers include functions like these.

Summary – great game with addiction danger

Shapez is a well made game with a very reasonable price point when you wait for one of the many steam sales. Its simple but clean graphics style allows it to run well on older and less powerful hardware. Combined with the addicting nature of its automation gameplay which lets you want to build ever more complex and expanding factories across the whole map this game make for a great time killer for long train rides or flights. Also thanks to its integrated modding capability the game even allows you to customize it to your liking and has a passionate community.

Introduction to CHIMPS Mode

CHIMPS mode removes all forms of help and bonuses, providing a raw test of strategy. With 100 rounds to survive and no room for mistakes, success in this mode requires flawless play. The various maps in BTD6 add another layer of difficulty, each presenting its own set of challenges and opportunities. While some maps may seem nearly impossible, others offer a more manageable path to victory. If you are a starter and have difficulty getting CHIMPS done check out these maps in accending order.

10. Monkey Meadow

As the first map, Monkey Meadow offers a balanced challenge. Its loops and overlapping track sections provide many strategic placement options for towers. However, the limited water areas mean fewer chances for powerful water-based towers, adding a small twist to the strategy. Despite this, its relative simplicity makes it a great starting point for players aiming for a CHIMPS win.

9. Winter Park

Winter Park is popular for its straightforward layout. The long path and multiple corners ensure excellent tower coverage, and the central fountain allows for the use of submarines and buccaneers, which are very strong in CHIMPS mode. This makes Winter Park an ideal choice for beginners facing the CHIMPS challenge.

8. Town Center

Town Center combines simplicity with strategic depth, similar to an easier version of Monkey Meadow. The winding track and available water spots make it a very good map for CHIMPS runs. Players must navigate line of sight issues caused by buildings on the map, but careful tower placement can easily solve these problems.

7. Infernal

Infernal, an expertlevel map, surprisingly offers a manageable route to CHIMPS success. The dual tracks and ample water spots create unique strategic opportunities. Though challenging, its design allows for effective use of various tower types, making it a rewarding option for experienced players aiming to showcase their skills.

6. Park Path

Park Path is a balance between challenge and accessibility. The looping track ensures extensive coverage, and the central stream supports boat usage, enhancing defensive capabilities. This map is perfect for intermediate players workin on their CHIMPS strategies.

5. Off the Coast

Despite its scary appearance, Off the Coast is a straightforward map for CHIMPS mode. Its long, straight path and numerous water spots simplify tower placement and strategy. This map is excellent for players trying to train before moving on to more difficult challenges.

4. Candy Falls

Candy Falls combines length and looping tracks, offering numerous opportunities for effective tower placement. Its long path supports sustained defense, making it one of the easier maps for CHIMPS. By the way, it features a fun Easter egg, rewarding players with a special song and an achievement.

3. Dark Castle

Dark Castle, an expert-level map, is deceptively manageable in CHIMPS mode. Its initial four lanes quickly converge into a single path, enabling concentrated defense. The presence of water and the absence of significant line-of-sight issues further simplify tower placement. Dark Castle is ideal for players seeking an expert CHIMPS medal.

2. Resort

Resort is one of the easiest maps for CHIMPS due to its forgiving layout. This waw the first map i myself managed to complete. The upper right corner sees repeated Bloon passes, allowing a few well-placed towers to handle most of the defense. The big space with much room for water monkeys aswell makes this a straightforward CHIMPS win.

1. Logs

Logs is widely considered the easiest map in BTD6. Its extensive track coverage and simple layout make it a go to for players attempting CHIMPS for the first time. The presence of water and frequent Bloon passes through track intersections ensure straightforward and effective tower placement. Logs is highly recommended for beginners aiming to earn their first CHIMPS medal.

Bloons Tower Defense 6 boss fights are some of the most fun things to do. Bloonarius and Lych, two huge MOABs, and their unique abilities make each round, especially in elite mode, a new challenge that gets harder as the rounds go up.

Choosing suitable towers is essential. Every monkey dollar counts when the boss is close. Deciding which tower to upgrade can be challenging because the game has so many. Luckily, this guide has everything you need to learn to beat bosses and get those Lych and Bloonarius medals.

Sniper Monkey – Elite Defender

In the early stages of the Bloonarius fight, controlling the crowd rushes of bloons is very important. In later levels, the towers you use to damage Bloonarius can also take care of his spawns. However, in the early levels, choosing the least expensive way to deal with the grouped bloons is essential. Your best bet is to use the elite defender (0-2-5), which eliminates many low-level bloons. Add an elite sniper (0-5-2) to it to make it stronger; even better, you can use it to make money.

Bomb Shooter – Recursive Clusters

Even though Elite Defender is an excellent way to deal with Bloonarius’ spam, recursive clusters might be an even better choice. A 2-0-4 or 0-2-4 bomb shooter will do a great job of controlling crowds for just a few thousand monkey dollars.

You only need three or four of these great towers to clear the first tier of elite Bloonarius, so remember them. In general it does help massively if you often use the recursive cluster bomb-shooter because it is one of the cheapest ways to deal with groups of balloons in the game.

Ninja Monkey – Sticky Bomb

It would help if you thought about how to hurt the bosses once the towers are in place to kill any possible spawns. Lych also spawns high-HP MOABs, so how you deal with his spawns will depend on how much damage you do to the boss.

The 1-0-4 ninja monkey is one of the best deals for tier one. Since four of these are pretty cheap and can beat even elite Bloonarius at tier one, it’s a great way to save money and still win in the first round.

Ice Monkey – Super Brittle

One important thing to remember when fighting bosses, especially in the higher levels of the elite, is to back up your damage dealers. Bloons is more than just throwing darts at balloons, even though that’s what the game is mostly about ;). With Lych you can’t use average support like alchemists because he’ll take the benefits your towers get from them.

You cannot strengthen your towers, but you can weaken the boss. When an ice monkey Super Brittle (5-2-0) is placed correctly, everything in its range takes more damage from all directions. This can weaken the boss and give your towers a significant advantage. You can think of this as an additional support for higher rounds.

Sniper Monkey – Cripple Moab

Because it can be used anywhere in the world, cripple MOAB (5-0-2) is another sniper monkey that works well as a supporting tower. Set it to “strongest” and give it the “Even Faster Firing” crosspath. It will keep going after the boss.

Cripple MOAB does damage and makes the targeted MOAB-class balloon take extra damage from all directions, making it like a whole map super brittle. When the above cross path is used, this debuff will last all the time, so cripple MOAB is a must for higher boss levels.

Druid – Avatar Of Wrath And Poplusts

You need to do much damage for tiers two and three as quickly as possible to win. You can’t use sticky bombs alone, especially in elite, so you must find other ways to deal damage that won’t cost too much. The avatar or wrath (0-2-5) is one of the best choices. Poplust (0-2-4) and its upgrade, the Avatar of Wrath, help each other when they’re close. This means an avatar surrounded by five populists can attack quickly and damage the boss heavily while it’s in range.

Dartling Gunner – M.A.D.

For both regular and elite bosses on Tier 2, the dartling gunner M.A.D (2-5-0), or MOAB Assured Destroyer, is the best weapon. You’ll need to use your mouse to follow the boss to keep the M.A.D. on target, but it does so much damage that no other tower can keep up.

On Elite, if you can’t afford a paragon by tier three, an M.A.D. with an avatar or rage setup is a good choice, so it can still be used differently. The M.A.D. is very cheap for its usefulness, so you have to have it when you fight bosses.

Super Monkey – Vengeful True Sun God

The most potent average tower in the game is the vengeful true sun god, or VTSG for short. It’s clear that it helps with boss fights, and if you’ve ever watched Bloon gameplay, you’ve probably seen it in action. But making one costs money and takes some planning, so if you make one, use the time between boss rounds wisely.

Start with an average super monkey and turn it into a sun avatar. Put 50,000 monkey dollars worth of towers from three of the four categories inside the avatar’s range, then boost it to a sun temple. Now, build 50k worth of towers from all four categories inside its radius. Get a legend of the night and an anti-balloon outside its radius outside its radius, and then level up to a true sun god. The other tier-five super monkeys will have an extra sacrifice animation, and you’ll have a VTSG.

Extra tips:

Paragons – Dart Monkey, Boomerang Monkey, Ninja Monkey, and Monkey Buccaneer

You can make a pinnacle for a very high cost when all three of a tower’s tier fives are on the map. Paragons are particular tier six upgrades. The higher the degree of a ninja paragon, the more value you put into that tower on the map and the more ninja monkeys you upgraded in those towers. The higher the total pops between those towers, the higher the degree of the ninja paragon.

Paragons already do crazy amounts of damage and do even more damage to bosses and elite bosses, so they should be used. The buccaneer paragon, navarch of the seas, is an excellent choice for water maps because you can farm merchantmen to make money, and the people you farm for money also work as great sacrifices for a while.

Banana Farms

These towers all cost a lot of money. If you want to afford them, you must start building and improving banana farms as soon as the game begins. While the 4-2-0 banana research facility makes the most money, other strategies can work. For example, central markets work well using any of the above boat farming strategies. You can turn your farms into a monkeyopolis with a village, making you even more money. You must use your farms, no matter your choice, because they are necessary for bosses.

Connect X to X and Y to Y – I am done, right? – Gameplay basics

In Lyne, as the name already suggests, your goal is to connect two points of one color with one line. While constructing a way you’ll have to move the line through blocks of the corresponding color. Each block is only allowed to be connect once, only some connector blocks are meant to be crossed multiple times to complete a level.

Depending on the level the amount of colored blocks that have to be connected changes and you’ll find more of the connector blocks. The difficulty of levels varies in each set of levels.

If you’re interested in steam achievements: the 33 achievements require you to complete all of the initial “alphabet levels” which sum up to 650 single levels and 10 daily sets which the total of levels up to 900. In addition to that you’ll simply have to change the color palette once.

Fancy colors – Game design and level structure

Lyne is made out of simple shapes like rectangles and triangles that can be connected with simple lines. The beauty of the game comes from the different color palette options that are unlocked through completing certain milestones.

If you’re playing with headphones you’ll be able to enjoy some very satisfying sounds each time you complete a level or draw your line through the shapes.

Each alphabetically sorted set of 25 levels includes a variety of difficulties which leads to a interesting game experience. Sometimes I was able to complete multiple levels in a minute and sometimes one level took me up to 10 minutes.

In addition to the “normal” you also get multiple daily sets each day that are generated to create more new levels. These vary in difficulty but are generally not harder than what you’ll be used to from the “alphabet levels”.

How to beat the challenge – key elements

1. Make sure to have a defense for all kinds of bloons – twice!

As the gear in the middle in the map turns 1/8 of a rotation every round make sure that you have defense for all bloons classes on both sides. Two wizards monkeys (0-3-2) will do a good job of slashing through most of you problems.

2. Banana plantage – “investing upgrades”

Starting early with the Banana plantage seems like a stupid idea as it takes at least 3 upgrades away from our tight budget. The trick behind this idea is to invest these 3 upgrades to be able to afford the much more expensive upgrades for other towers in the later game.

3. Late game: super monkey to the win

As the game proceeds to the end it is wise to use the super monkey (0-2-3) upgrade as it offers the ability to jump across the map thus allowing it to always stay on the side facing the bloons track. Make sure to always use this ability as early as possible as the other side of the gear will get out of reach. Additionally this upgrade path also allows the super monkey to handle tarn bloons.

Summary

The new “Grow less than Galaxili!” is a fun but quite difficult new BTD6 challenge that came with the latest update. Using the super monkey technique and the help of this guide you can easily cope with it. Have fun!

Die erste Aufgabe ist erstmal die schwerste. Die zweite und dritte bedienen sich dabei den selben wiederholenden Mustern und es ist einfach das Konzept aus der ersten auf die die anderen anzuwenden.

Die allgemeine Idee ist, dass der Wurfpfeilaffe (0-2-4) als Hauptverteidigung gegen die Bloons verwendet wird, während der Alchemist ihn mit dem Berserker-Gebräu-Upgrade (4-2-0) verstärkt. Zuletzt hilft der Ingenieur den beiden mit einem Upgrade auf (0-2-4), wodurch er die Bloon-Falle bauen kann. Sollte ein großer Bloon-Ansturm im Anmarsch sein, können auch die Chinooks verwendet werden, um einen der Affen ein wenig zu bewegen da der Chinook in der Lage ist, Bloons sowohl wegzublasen als auch abzuschießen während er auf dem Weg ist einen Tower zu bewegen.

2. Quest

Die zweite Quest wird grundsätzlich wie die erste erledigt. Die drei Affen werden an besseren Stellen auf der Strecke platziert und auf mehr oder weniger die gleichen Wege geupgraded wie beim ersten mal. In diesem Fall kann es sinnvoll sein, den Ingenieur auf (2-0-4) zu verbessern, da er dann besser mit größeren Mengen nicht sehr starker Bloons umgehen kann, die durch die Verteidigung dringen.

3. Quest

Die dritte Quest ist um einiges schwieriger als die zweite. Vor allem gegen Ende des Spiels sind etwas zeitlich richtig ausgeführte Aktionen erforderlich. Außerdem steht in diesem Level etwas mehr Geld zur Verfügung, sodass man den Dart-Affen auf (0-2-5) upgraden muss. Wichtig ist auch, dass es in diesem Level sinnvoller ist, den Ingenieur-Affen auf (4-0-2) zu upgraden, da man sonst die zu Beginn einströmenden Ballonmassen nicht loswird.

Tipp 1 – Konzentrieren Sie sich auf wenige Türme

Der Schlüssel zum Gewinnen dieser Herausforderung besteht darin, so wenige Türme wie nötig zu verwenden und diese auf das höchstmögliche Upgrade aufzurüsten. Die Auswahl dieser Türme muss sorgfältig erfolgen, da in den höheren Runden eine Abdeckung aller Bloon-Klassen erforderlich ist. Aus diesem Grund ist es sinnvoll, einen Affen mit der Fähigkeit zu haben, mit vielen Bloons fertig zu werden, wie zum Beispiel den Affen-Freibeuter auf dem oberen und mittleren Upgrade-Pfad (5-2-0), kombiniert mit dem relativ günstigen Affendorf, um ihm auch die Fähigkeit zu geben Tarnballons abzuschiesen.

Tipp 2 – Beginnen Sie mit dem Helden

Wir haben bereits festgestellt, dass für die in den höheren Runden kommenden Massen an Bloons der Affen-Freibeuter und der Klebeschütze (beide auf ihrem oberen Pfad) eine sehr gute Wahl sind. Kaufe diese Haupttürme jedoch nicht gleich zu Beginn, da sie für die große Auswahl an Bloons in den ersten Runden nicht ausreichend ausgestattet und zu teuer sind. Wie in einem normalen Spiel ist es daher auch hier sinnvoll, den Helden (in diesem Fall Quincy) zuerst zu platzieren, damit er im Verlauf des Spiels aufleveln kann.

Tipp 3 – Boosten der Türme

Selbst nachdem du deine Verteidigung mit einem empfohlenen Maximum von etwa 3 bis 4 Türmen ausgebaut haben, kann es sinnvoll sein, den Rest deines Geldes für einen (3-2-0) Alchemisten auszugeben, der deine bestehenden Türme mit dem Berserker-Gebräu stärkt. Eine weitere relativ günstige Option ist der Kauf des oberen Affendorf Pfades (2-2-0), der deinen Affen in Reichweite eine schnellere Angriffsgeschwindigkeit verleiht.

Tip 1 – Focus on few towers

The key to winning this challenge is using as few towers as needed and upgrading these to the highest possible. The selection of these towers must be carefully chosen as it is necessary to have a coverage of all bloon classes on the higher rounds. For this reason it makes sense to have a monkey with the ability to deal with many bloons, such as the monkey buccaneer on the upper and middle upgrade path (5-2-0), combined with the relatively cheap monkey village to give it the ability to also shoot down camo bloons.

Tip 2 – Start with the hero

We already established that for the coming masses of bloons the monkey buccaneer and the glue gunner (both on their upper path) are very good choices. But don’t buy these main towers right at the start as they are not equipped enough for the large variety of bloons in early rounds. As in a normal game it therefore also makes sense to place the hero (in this case Quincy) first so that it can level up.

Tip 3 – Boost your towers

Even after building out your defense with an advised maximum of around 3 to 4 towers it can make sense to spend the rest of you money on an (3-2-0) alchemist to boost you existing towers with the berserker brew. Another relatively cheap option is buying the upper village path (2-2-0) giving your monkeys in range a faster attack speed.

Quest 1

The first quest might also be the most difficult as the challenge is quite repetitive and you can use the concepts on the two other quests.

The general idea is that the dart monkey on (0-2-4) is used as the main bloon defense while the alchemist boost it with the berserker brew upgrade (4-2-0). Lastly the engineer helps the two with an upgrade to (0-2-4) allowing it to build the bloon trap. If you fear that a big bloon rush comes through you can also use the chinooks to move one of the monkeys by just a tiny bit which will then help you as the chinook is able to blow away bloons as well as shoot them.

Quest 2

The second quest is basically done like the first. The three monkeys are placed at better places across the track and upgraded to more or less the same paths. In this case thought it can make sense to upgrade the engineer to (2-0-4) as it is then able to deal better with bigger amounts of not very strong bloons leaking through the defenses.

Quest 3

The third quest is quite a bit more difficult than the fist two. It requires a bit more timed actions especially towards the end of the game. You will also have a bit more money available in this level giving you the ability to upgrade the dart monkey to (0-2-5). It is also important that it makes more sense in this level to upgrade the engineer monkey to (4-0-2) in this quest as otherwise one wont be able to get rid of the balloon masses rushing in at the beginning.

Assassins Creed 2 was first released in 2009 and is available for older consoles and PC. There is also a mobile adaptation of the game but today I’ll share my first experiences with the steam version of the game. So far I’ve progressed around 2 hours in the game and completed the first parts of the main quests and some side quests.

In Assassins Creed 2 (AC 2) you’re continuing the story that was started in Assassins Creed, the predecessor of this game. You’re playing as Desmond Miles who is recruited and trained through the Animus 2.0, a machine that let’s the user experience past memories. Desmond is experiencing the story of Ezio Auditore, a assassins from florence during the renaissance era.

The story is all about the conspiracy against Ezio’s father and his brother who where killed because they were betrayed by a friend. Ezio is trained to be an assassins and tasked to eliminate everyone who was involved. Another important part of the story is preventing the templars to find the apple of Eden, a piece of Eden which is a powerful artifact.

Things I enjoyed during my playtime

The parkour element in AC 2 has a better flow than in later games such as AC: Syndicate. It is also more of a essential part of the experience other than for instance in AC: Origins where the map is way widely spread and you’ll have to rely on horses to get from point A to point B. Because Assassins Creed 2 is taking place in a ancient city you can basically get everywhere without touching the small streets by taking the route over the rooftops.

The fighting system is pretty simple (at least so far) and involves simple attacking with your fists, blocking attacks or dashing and using the hidden blade that is unlocked later in the game. Sometimes it feels frustrating because the enemies can block lots of hits while in other situations you can eliminate them with 2 hits.

Parts of the game that can be improved

The controls are annoying to configure as the default controller buttons don’t match the buttons shown on the screen and you’ll have to reconfigure them. While playing with keyboard and mouse you’ll still get buttons displayed that relate to controller buttons and its hard to remember which button is which key on the keyboard at first.

The game appearance is, as expected, not very good compared to todays standards but it’s not really noticeable during the fighting and parkour parts of the game and more during the cutscenes. Similar to my critic on AC: Syndicate the menus feel aged and a bit to decorated and animated in my opinion.

The game language is automatically set to your system’s language which is quite annoying. On the other hand you’re able to choose which language you want the audio dialogue in for cutscenes.

I would recommend buying this game either in the Ezio Collection which includes the first 3 parts of the game or on sale on steam for around 3€. The game sure is fun but not worth the 10€ anymore.
