Super Catventurer

Head towards the Furbidden Fields and catnap at the Last Rest. Farm the skulls in the Furbiden Fields, they reward around 2.4k xp each. Once you killed all return to the main menu and reload your safe, making them spawn all over again. Just repeat until you gained enough levels.

Fashionista Lion

If you’re still missing some gear pieces check if you opened all golden chests. If yes. head towards the blacksmith Kit Cat and purchase as many of the 50 gold chest as you can until you get the item. (according to some steam users this may take some time) If you’re running into a financial problem, visit the founders island and farm the founders cave. Each run will give you around 1500 gold if you focus on the chest in the center. (thanks nullpointerat)

Furry Armored, Naked Cat, Stronger Enemies, Nine Lives, Level One

Let’s continue with the ones relating to the mew game mode, a more challenging, shortened playthrough variant of the game. In this mode you can select modifiers that effect your gameplay. Simply complete the game with the one matching the achievement name and you’ll get the achievement.

GLPC: How did you discover The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and when did you start playing?

Pater Jakob: There definitely was not a moment that could be distinguished as THE moment I decided to try out the game. It was more like a constant confrontation with it over Youtube and over social medias, mentioned in context of “great games” or “games of the decade” etc. I don’t actually know exactly when I first bought the game, but it probably was sometime in 2019. That said I could not really get into the it on my first and even second attempted play-throughs, which only lasted about 5 hours. It was almost 5 years after the games release, at the start of the pandemic, when I got really hooked. On my third time trying I got completely addicted, played through it doing almost everything, completing all the achievements and yet I still could not get enough.

GLPC: Was that the moment you decided to speedrunt the game or did you discover the possibility somewhere else? Do you remember what or who got you into speedrunning witcher 3?

Pater Jakob: I still remember the first time I got in contact with Witcher 3 Speedruns. I was already familiar with the concept of Speedrunning and following other popular games I played like Zelda: Breath of the Wild. So one evening I was curious if someone had done a 100% run of this game, and to my complete surprise there actually was one, done very recently by a runner called Aliatus_Aquilan. I was so impressed by that 19 hour run that I followed him on Twitch and checked out the leaderboards on the Website of speedrun.com. There I found other active runners who were streaming, like Trig, who’s run of the Blood and Wine DLC inspired me to do a run of my own.

GLPC: Whats your favourite questline in the game? What moment or place do you enjoy a lot?

Pater Jakob: My favourite questline must be the ending of the Hearts of Stone Main Quest, the last 2 quests to be more precise. They are dark, sad and scary at the same time. They mix being relatable and the fantastical elements of the world perfectly, all the while using the gameplay in a super unique way for the story telling.
My favorite moment is 100% killing Imlerith, the sheer brutality and satisfaction you get from avenging Vesemir immediately is just unmatched. It has a perfect build-up in the form of the Bald Mountain too. An honorable mention would definitely be the empress-ending, specifically the final moments you spend with Ciri in the snowy white Orchard.
The best place in the game for me is the Fairytale-World in the Blood and Wine DLC. I’ve always loved fairytales as a child, so seeing an entire area filled to the brink with easter eggs and references to them, all while being visually gorgeous and having a great quest with unique enemies, is just perfect.

GLPC: How are you motivated to keep playing the same game over and over again?

Pater Jakob: As I said before, I really can’t get enough of this game. And speedrunning is a way of playing it that is very different from the casual experience. It is not like the most speedgames out there, consisting of lots of cutscenes and not containing any crazy glitches or sequence breaks. I think my main motivation for comes from my love for this game and my obsession with optimizing every small movement and fighting sequence.
For not losing this motivation I think there are 2 key reasons. Firstly, Witcher 3 is just a great game, which has so much content you can just spend a lot of time without repetitiveness, in case of a 100% run. And secondly, taking longer breaks. When you speedrun for a World Record you need to grind, you need to play a lot to gain muscle memory and learn the perfect movements down to the smallest details. Obviously you can’t do that forever without getting burned out, so longer, even months long breaks after achieving your goal are necessary.

GLPC: How do you physically and mentally prepare for an multiple hours long speedrun, I imagine it can be quite hard to maintain focus.

Pater Jakob: Really depends on the run. For the any% classic runs, which are about 3 hours you don’t need much prep at all, I usually start sessions in the evening, after dinner. You just need to keep the time in mind, so that you don’t finish a run at 1am on workdays. For Blood and Wine 100% runs, which are roughly 4 hours, just keep enough water near you, and maybe plan an afternoon around it. You can obviously do it in the evening too, if you get started early enough. The full 100% run is where it gets really interesting. For a 20 hour run, you need to plan a whole day just for that, and you need to start early in the morning to keep your sleep schedule at least somewhat alive. I also searched for natural breaks during the run where you can go to the toilet, get food, etc. I also prepared lots of food to eat and water to drink, obviously. Luckily I did not have many issues getting mentally ready for the run, maybe you are a bit nervous at the start, but once the first major hurdles are gone it gets easy to keep going. It’s very important to have good practise and knowledge of the route, so you don’t get lost in the middle of the run or lose motivation after something does not work out. I also think, although I am not a psychologist or something, that you need to have some sort of aptitude to be able to play, keep calm and concentrate to do the most optimal decisions for such a long period of time.

To be honest the game is pretty generous when it comes to keeping you concentrated, it gives you a lot of breaks. Gwent for example takes up a good deal of the run and does not require you full attention. Then there is sailing, which if you tried to get all the Points of Interest you know what I am talking about, that takes a chunk of time too, and, with the calming music of Skellige, is pretty relaxing. Outside of 100% I don’t do oversized sessions, if I don’t get a run going in a reasonable amount of time I take a break or continue the next day. That helps with not getting frustrated, there is no point playing if you are.

GLPC: What do you think about Gwent, the card game integrated in the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt?

Pater Jakob: Gwent is great casually, and I loved it during my first playthrough. But in my opinion it gets pretty boring and repetitive after that. Once you saw every card, the simplicity of the AI really shows, even on the hardest difficulty it is very easy to manipulate. The card dynamics and interactions also get repetitive. When speedrunning its especially blunt. It has very little possibility in terms of strategies to go fast, and is purely RNG (luck-based). You can’t influence the hand of your opponent obviously, which makes runs that contain gwent extremely dependent on luck. Even if you win you can lose upwards of 30 seconds just from bad luck and the AI stalling the game. Add all the general problems on top and it gets pretty bad. In the 100% run though it can be quite a welcome break, it is easy to play with just your mouse hand and you can take the time to eat and drink.

GLPC: How has speedrunning the witcher 3 impacted your overall experience and enjoyment of the game?

Pater Jakob: When I first started speedrunning I thought that I could never enjoy the game casually again, I just could not enjoy sitting back and playing the “intended way”, or watching all the cutscenes, going for less optimal builds, etc. But that feeling went away once I started with the 100% run. Completing everything in the game as fast as possible makes you appreciate the game way more than doing just the main story. I studied it so intensely, like never before during my casual playthrough, really learning everything there is about the game and learning the most optimal routes and obscure little quests. I think that made me fall in love all over again, nowadays I can definitely enjoy both ways of playing the game.

GLPC: Did you ever think about speedrunning other games than Witcher 3 or did you already tried some?
Pater Jakob: One obvious future goal would be to do a 100% run including the DLC’s in under 24h, that would be a huge milestone. Another thing would be an anthology run of Witcher 1, 2 and 3 in one go. Other games I tried out running were Witcher 1 and Far Cry 5, but I stuck with Witcher 3 as my main game. I definitely want to speedrun every witcher game at some point.

GLPC: Do you have any tips for our readers that want to get start speedrunning Witcher 3?

Pater Jakob: If you feel like speedrunning would be fun for you, make sure to join our discord community. There you will find resources that make your life easier and lots of people willing to help you, if you have any problems.

On the In-Game side of things, starting out running is actually very easy, and a lot of fun. Just expect the occasional bug, glitch or CDPR-jank (CD Projekt Red) that can happen in their games. This is usually pretty entertaining though.

And obviously don’t be disheartened if your first attempts are much slower than the top runs, improving in this game comes a lot from skill in movement and combat, and that takes time to master. It sure as heck is a fun journey though!

Assassins Creed Syndicate was published by Ubisoft in late 2015 and takes you back to the Victorian London where you need to defeat the templar leader Starrick and his gang, the Blighters.

So far I’ve accumulated around 35 hours of playtime, completed the main story line and am now looking forward to searching for all the little collectibles.

In this review I’ll share my experiences and opinion on the game to help you decide if it’s worth a close look for yourself.

Impressions

Story

In Assassins Creed: Syndicate you get to explore the Victorian London during the industrial revolution. The game starts of with an introduction in the real world: the player is an assassin initiate and is instructed to use the memories of 2 assassin twins to locate a piece of eden, an powerful artifact. You get to relive the life of Jacob and Evie Frye and have to fight against the Templars that are also searching for the piece. (Even if you haven’t played any previous AC titles you’ll understand fast what the goal is)

You first go through an prologue that introduces you to the basic game mechanics. After that you meet Henry Green in London. He’s another assassin that introduces you to London’s problem: the Templars have taken over the city and a controlling every borough through their gang: the Blighters. They are lead by Crawford Starrick. Your goal is to eliminate all Templars, reconquer the city and widen the brotherhoods influence.

Throughout the game Jacob’s goal is to liberate the city from the templar-run gangs while Evie is looking for the piece of Eden. They create their own gang called “The Rooks” and meet allies that unlock activities and missions around the map. You as a player take down multiple important Templars with the goal to get to Starrick in the end.

There is also a time anomaly in the memory simulation that transports you back in time into London during the first world war. Here you meet Winston Churchill and have to defeat London from German spies.

What I really like about the game is that many parts of the story are based on real people that have lived during that time. This makes the environment feel very realistic and you can also learn some things about history if you take your time and actually read the information the game provides you through ingame encyclopedia. What I don’t like is the stereotypical division of the Rooks with green colors and the Blighters with red colors. Sure this was probably done for gameplay reasons but it just feels a lot like stereotyped thinking.

Game appearance

The game offers a graphical appearance that can be proudly compared to today’s games. Sure it’s not the best of the best but the buildings are really detailed and the developers didn’t just copy paste them all over the place. For some there is even an interior that you can enter and explore. The buildings feel very realistic and I’ve found myself taking lots of pictures to capture the architectural beauty of London during the Victorian era.

You can unlock many outfits for the characters that can be customized with your favorite colors. The weapon appearance and kinds also offer a wide variety.

The age of the game can be spotted when it comes to cutscenes as you get a closer look at the faces of the characters and building textures. The menu interactions also feel a bit outdated as they are a bit different to today’s menu controls.

When it comes to dialogue I really enjoyed the way it was written. The main characters all have a well described back story and you can understand their motivations and ideas. What I was disappointed by is the fact, that only some voicelines are actually translated to German while other characters solely communicate in English. This is improved through subtitles but a bit sad for such a big game published like Ubisoft.

Gameplay

AC Syndicate is an open world game so exploration is the most important part of the game and you’ll also get to know more about historical buildings and persons. Parkour is also a main component of the game (as in every AC game) and helps to reach areas that would be unavailable to the average citizen. I’ve had some problem with this system as it has some illogical options that for example don’t allow climbing to some places that look accessible.

The main part of the game are the missions: You get a main objective that needs to be completed and some side objectives that give you a 100% sync bonus on the money and experience points you earn. The mission goals reach from killing a target to collecting items unseen. Mission are the main source of experience points besides the fight clubs.

Both characters can switch between short and long range weapons and other gadgets that can be helpful for stealth and offensive combat. Alongside a firearm and a melee weapon of your choice you can unlock and use throwing knifes, offensive and defensive bombs and bolts. This allows a variety of ways to approach missions and leaves room for creativity. Most of the time the game helps you think a certain way to successfully get the right idea how to approach a mission. The combat system is quite easy to understand but hard to master against well trained enemies that need to be blocked fast. What I really enjoyed about the combat are the various elimination animations.

In the open world you can also find activities: Bounty hunts where you need to locate a target in an area filled with enemies and get them to Inspector Abberline. Templar hunts are basically elimination missions for a high ranking Templar member. There are also factory areas where you need to liberate child workers. If you’ve completed all of these acitivites for a borough you can start a gang war that is the final step to getting the control over an area of London. On your way between activities you’ll also find some random events where you for instance need to help some Rook gang members or catch a thief to help a civilian. You can also join a fight club and put your skill in unarmed fighting to the show while earning a good amount of experience points and money. Another option would be the horse races that are less brutal but also lots of fun. Especially when you discover that horse carriages can also drift.

Experience points help you earn ability points that can be used in a skill tree to unlock new abilities for both of your characters as the points stay the same on both of them. Money and materials collected from chests are used to purchase, craft and upgrade items and to get gang upgrades. Other collectibles include: beer bottles, helix glitches, illustrations, normal chests, letters, flowers and some hidden items that are required for a secret in the depths of London.

Lots of crafting recipes can only be found in golden chests that need to be located through exploration or through completing quests. What’s sad is that weapons you like can only be used efficiently for a small time windows as you progress through levels relatively fast. At level 10 (final level) you can start looking for your favorite items to use for the rest of your journey.

Grind

To really complete the game (not just 100% achievements) you need to complete multiple steps. Completing all main and side quests and conquering all of London’s boroughs is easily completed why playing normally. There are also some challenges that need to be completed to earn certain achievements and complete perks. These can be a bit of a pain in the *** because you’ll have to complete task like double and triple eliminations a lot. Searching all collectibles and picking up all of them also takes lots of time. (I used an interactive map to help me keep track of my progress).

This will probably take up to 50 hours if I had to guess. (I’ll update the review as soon as I’ve completed the entirety of the game)

Another thing I want to add: Start your game journey by concentrating on the missions first to get an basic idea of what the game is about and go on collectibles hunt after to avoid being overwhelmed by the huge amount of makers on your map. Also read through the tutorials provided by the game as the are a huge help to understand mechanics.

Soul Knight is a dungeon crawler game published by Chinese developer ChillyRoom in early 2017. The game offers either a single or multiplayer experience. Your goal is to complete levels filled with enemies, find better gear and try to get through 15 levels and 3 boss rooms.

Game appearence

The game is designed in a very beautiful pixel style. There also is retro style background music which matches the graphics very well. All characters and enemies are animated and very detailed. Characters also have many skin options to choose from.

Gameplay

As I mainly played the “normal mode” where you need to clear 3 floors with 5 levels each in both singleplayer and coop mode I’ll talk about this part of the game. It also offers other gamemodes with different experiences like a tower defense mode where you construct towers to keep monsters from attacking a central crystal.

Your goal is to get through 3 floors with 5 levels each. These levels include rooms where you need to defeat waves of enemies, chest rooms, where you can find new items or vendors that sell better weapons or consumables and event rooms, where you meet NPCs, different vendors or statues.

At the beginning of your run you can chooses between lots of character that all offer a different starting weapon and abilities. Most of them can be unlocked with ingame currency earned through daily logins or completed runs while some of them need to be purchased with real money. In the lobby you can also visit a garden where you can grow plants that can be used as weapons or are needed as crafting materials. There is also an area to craft weapons or armor and a kind of library where you can see all the gear you have collected throughout all of your runs.

All characters have 3 base stats: Life points, armor points and energy points. These can be upgraded during your run. Characters can be upgraded with jewels which are collected through runs and completing other objectives.

During the run you’ll be able to unlock new perks 3 times per floor. These range from getting a second weapon slot to having projectiles of your gun bounce of the walls. Another similar thing are statues that randomly appear in levels. If you pray to them with a little bit of money, you’ll receive a statue specific buff.

Weapons can be found in chests or bough from Vendors and have different stats. They can either be short range or long range weapons. Using a weapon can cost energy points and will do a certain amount of damage. Some weapons have a chance of hitting a critical hit or missing completely. There are over 400 weapons in the game at the moment and their appearance and effects change a lot. If you want to know more about them check out the Soul Knight Fandom.

At the end of each floor you’ll meet a boss. These can be quite hard to defeat if you aren’t fast enough to dodge the bullet rain some of them produce.

Critic?

The only thing I don’t like about the game is the fact that it’s more or less pay to win as you can speed through the character leveling progress and have access to otherwise unobtainable characters.

Another thing that needs improvement in my opinion is the lack of Google Play Achievements. This would add another reason to complete as many runs as possible.

The multiplayer mode is only accessible if you and your friends are at the same place as the devices connect by being in the same network or hotspot.

Knight of Pen and Paper 2 is the second part of the series published by Paradox Interactive. I bought the game on sale for around 2€. The game is best described as an old school round based rpg game. Its available in slightly different versions for Steam, Nintendo Switch and Xbox and as a free game on IOS and Android.

A pixel art dream – Game appearance

You play in a very beautiful drawn “pixely” environment with a static table in the middle. During battle there also some very nice fight animations.

The music is amazing but some of the sound effects like the fight completion sound can get annoying when you hear them to often.

Because of the pixel graphics and the fact that the pc version was “created”/published after the mobile version this can run on nearly any device.

Kill X in Y – Gameplay and Story

The base game took me around 8 hours to complete and the expansions another 8. With the expansions you just unlock new quest, characters, items and map areas. The basic gameplay idea is always the same: Quest mostly evolve around killing a certain amount of monster either for their loot or just for the sake of it. Sometimes you just need to talk to certain npc and travel or transport some items from A to B. Characters are controlled using buttons so you only need a mouse to play this game

In Knights of Pen and Paper 2 you travel around the land of Papero to different locations with different monster, NPCs and quests.
The main goal in the base game is to defeat the paper knight who wants to take over the world you are playing in. In the DLCs there are other story lines but I don’t want to spoil too much as it’s way more fun to discover it for yourself.

You can sleep nearly everywhere to regain health points and energy. There also also dungeons in which you can’t heal and need to clear rooms on multiple floors to gain rewards. These are hard to clear at the beginning but a good source of experience points when you need a higher level for a quest. While traveling you might also stumble across some hidden encounters or ambushes.

Experience points are earned by completing quests and battles. If you gain enough for a level up you can invest skill points. Every character has two active and two passive skills you can improve and two normal passive skills. In the beginning its a good idea to concentrate on one skill for each character so you can use them effectively.

Your efficiency in battle is also based on health and energy stats and your battle values are calculated based on the 3 attributes: Body, Senses and Mind. You can increase these later in the game using certain equipment but it is import to choose the “right” combination of character class, race and type.

The fights themself vary in difficulty so I recommend picking up a healer quite early in the game and getting a good single target damage dealer.

A shop can be found in the major cities/villages where you can buy and sell items and ingredients you need or want to get rid of. If you don’t want to sell your precious items you can put them in a stash that can also be accessed in the major cities.

Speaking of ingredients: There is a crafting system in the game that you can use to make special weapons and enchant them.

Beat the Virtual out of Reality – Grind

If you’re playing on Steam there are 33 achievements to get. I would say 32 of them are doable in a normal play-through.

One of them being the “Beat the Virtual out of Reality” achievement requires a lot of grind and cost me around 5 hours to do after I completed the game story wise. You basically need to complete the whole Bestiary which is a ingame book that tells you weaknesses and other traits of monsters. To complete it you need to kill 30 of each monster which is easy on lower level but annoying once you get to higher level monster.

The other problem is that you need some expansions to get all achievements. The only game expansion you are able to buy on steam is “Here be dragons” for around 5€. I was able to purchase the other 2 expansions with ingame currency. So I recommend checking the “Magazine” button in the top left corner first to see if you’re able to get the “Here be dragons” expansion for ingame money.
